ARGENTINA: PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR ISLAND TRADE
Your Managers have been notified that vessels:
- intending to transit between ports located in mainland Argentina and those located in the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), South Georgia and South Sandwich; or
- intending to transit Argentinean waters bound for the latter-named ports, and/or;
- carrying goods to be transported, directly or indirectly, between such ports;
must request prior authorization from the competent Argentinean authorities.
It is assumed that, in due course, formal regulations will be issued by those authorities, although only local executive action has been reported to date, as below.
Last week, a vessel which arrived in Argentina from Puerto Argentino/Port Stanley was not permitted to load or take bunkers within waters under the Argentinean jurisdiction since she was “banned” by the authorities there. Furthermore, the vessel was subjected to a lengthy port State control inspection which further delayed her sailing from Argentina.
Your Managers will keep you posted of developments as they become available in this regard.
Your managers thank Pandi Liquidadores S.R.L. for information forming the basis of this Alert.
